Where does the home battery go? Placement, fuse box and cable route

A battery needs a dry, ventilated spot close to the fuse box. Which spots work, which rule themselves out — and what that does to the price.

A home battery is not a small device on the wall: it has weight, needs space around it and a dry, ventilated spot, and it runs on a dedicated circuit in the fuse box. The best placement is therefore generally close to that fuse box — the shorter the cable route, the less mounting work and the less loss along the way. The installer assesses the spot during the survey, looking at load-bearing construction, ventilation, temperature and the clearance that must stay free around the unit.

Common spots are a garage, an indoor storage room or a utility room: dry, ventilated and out of the frost. Outdoors is possible too — on the facade or in a weatherproof outdoor cabinet — but then temperature swings and water resistance weigh more heavily in the choice of device. A damp cellar, a crawl space or a closed cupboard without ventilation rules itself out. If you live in an apartment it gets harder: there is rarely a private storage room next to the fuse box, and the communal part of the building is HOA territory. That is a conversation beforehand, not a surprise afterwards.

In the fuse box the battery gets a dedicated circuit. If the consumer unit is full, or dates from before residual-current devices became common, preparing the fuse box is the first step: € 350 to € 950, depending on the state of the existing installation. That work belongs to the battery job. Upgrading the grid connection itself goes through the grid operator, with its own rates and lead time, and therefore falls outside the installation quote.

Make the survey easy and the quote gets sharper. Photos of your fuse box (open, with the circuits visible), of the intended placement and of the route between them are enough to base an installation quote on. Pass on the distance between fuse box and placement spot and mention whether drilling through walls or along the facade is needed: that is exactly the extra work that pulls quotes apart afterwards. The bands per job are in the price index.
